Late-night supper
Having late-night supper is fun. Having late-night supper with cheese prata and endless silly jokes is shiok-alicious!
I was in crusade's Refresh! Camp last night and after our talks, we trooped down to a prata place around kim seng promenade to have supper till 2am. Walking down the streets, i was surprised to still find people pubbing on a MONDAY night. Don't they have to work the next day???!
Right, back to Refresh!. I got to learn about conversational evangelism from dr. dave geisler who is certainly a gifted apologetist. Any seemingly tough questions that non-believers may ask were easily addressed by him. To me, it was immensely helpful and I feel confident to face any skeptics!

First
In all my life, I've never stepped into great world city. Today, I did. *cue angels' opera-like ahhhhh*
Call me bumpkin but I admit I do not know many parts of Singapore even though it's so small. If it wasn't for Refresh! which was held at boys' brigade hq (very near GWC), I wouldn't have came to gwc.
I went there in the morning after i left the camp and it was quiet enough to let me explore it. GWC offers a pretty good mix of retail outlets. I'm definitely going back again.
After that, i went to raffles city, hoping to buy donuts from recently-famous Donut Factory, thinking that there wouldn't be any queue since it's 11am on a weekday morning.
I was wrong.

Such irony
I was thinking on the bus...
Global warming is raising temperatures. So to cool down, we use air-cons. But guess what? Air-cons (and cars, refrigerators and blah blah blah as well) emit gases that worsen global warming! What was supposed to cool us down is actually making the weather hotter!
The irony of it all.

It's good to be a student
there's a travel fair at ntu and ticket prices are cut-throat!!!
those places are calling... they are enticing me! ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.
i think backpacking would definitely be fun, especially if you are alone!
i remember i took the plane back from china alone last year. it was the best experience and i had such a great time being independent.
i remember mr uri, this jewish man who sat beside me during my plane ride from kunming to bangkok. we talked for 2 hours straight! he was truly passionate about agriculture and i could clearly visualise the glint in his eyes when we saw paddy fields as we are nearing bangkok.

could vividly recall this part of our conversation:
mr uri: what's your name?
me: my name is esther.
mr uri: esther? oh you saved our lives!
me: (blank look for a while) hahahaha yea!!

He was actaully alluding it to the bible story of Queen Esther who saved her people, the Jews, from a genocide
mr. uri: you must be a Christian.
me: you're right! hahaha.

I'm proud of my name because it has such profound significance!

Take science, appreciate God
I am glad I have to take cross-faculty modules because I got to connect back to my scientific roots and marvel at God's wisdom in His creations. As some of you know, I am taking astronomy this semester where I study about planets. Do you know? We could have easily been wiped out if a comet or asteroid (and there are billions of them hurtling around space at terribly fast speeds) hits Earth! So why isn't Earth hit after thousands of years?
Because of the planet Jupiter.
It has such massive gravitational force that it attracts all those comets and asteroids into it. Thus, they don't hit Earth.
WOW.
AND. Earth's life-sustaining atmosphere could have been blown away by strong solar winds of the Sun but it did not as there are magnetic fields surrounding Earth that deflect these winds away.
WOW.

God sure wants to protect His creations.

Quite Happy Lunar New Year!
despite being sick, i miraculously enjoyed myself during chinese new year at my ah ma's place. i couldn't enjoy the food but i enjoyed the company tremendously. just by playing boggle, a seemingly boring word game, we had so much laughter trying to form words and in lingsheng kor's case, singlish. (he formed "teh" and "susy"!....lol)
we cousins wanted to go out together and sing through the night at kbox but man, it was super duper wuper expensive! too costly for poor undergrads like me. it was then called off. sigh. pity.
next time, lingsheng kor asked us to go diving with him! well, he daringly said he would sponsor us the basic course in diving. cooool.

1st day of cny daybreak:
taken it in the cab while on my way to church

first stop: nainai's house. give a shot at nainai's age ;P

the big friendly giant (guess who) & the excitable dwarf

lingsheng kor trying to show off his toned muscles.

everyone's smiling nicely but i was caught unaware!

now it's ah ma's turn :)

Welfare week
God clearly understands my bad bad horrible feelings that i had last week. commitment problems and tests pushed me to the edge and it was really really really bad. but God always know. So, this week, ntu had this Welfare Week which was truly God-sent.
The Student Union gave out free popcorn, cotton candy, pizza, henna paintings and caricatures to us students for 3 days! ok, technically speaking, we have already paid for them (my student bill always has this Student Union fee. disgusting.) but i was cheered up nonetheless. And on valentines' day, they gave out heart-shaped balloons! denise and weiching gave me valentines' presents as well. so nice of them!! The day ended with a fantastic jap dinner with my sisters.

My horrid feelings were washed away by these good moments. so now, it's time for me to re-look my commitments in church and school ....

Ahhhhh.. choo! *wipes nose*
yay. great. i'm sick... at this time?!! as i'm typing this, my nose is dripping like a tap. ok, i must wipe my nose first.
perhaps it was my incessant "i hate chinese new year" declaration that decided to play a cruel trick on me by REALLY making me hate cny. oh come on.
i can't enjoy the bak kua now :( and the pineapple tarts. and the love letters. and the sweets. and the .. EVERYTHING!
boo hoo hoo.
ok, i take back my words. i do enjoy chinese new year. i love the food and the festivity of having everyone together. only pitfall of this festival?
those noisy, shrilly, "tong tong chiang" songs.

something to ponder about...
the number of real friends you have is inversely proportional to the number of friends you have on Friendster - Chee Han, the strange tutor who has a 8-dollars jacket that he is proud of.

I just came out of my astronomy quiz, gravely appalled and deeply outraged!
Students were blatantly looking for answers in their notes during the quiz!!! They were even discussing answers because they took advantage of the big lecture theatre, and thought that no one would see.
Such outrageous acts are insulting to the lecturer and to other students who studied very hard. Crap.
I am sorely disappointed by these incorrigible students.
No wonder the lecturer kept saying it is easy to get an A.

I've deleted my previous post because it was too whiny.
My previous post was too sad to fit into my happy blog. Anyway, it is not that my problem has been solved (it hasn't! i think i shouldn't procrastinate any further...), it's just that my blog is a happy public sphere and personal problems should not be brought here. Well, you may beg to differ but it's my own conviction.

CNY Reunion is over!
It's over, as in over and done with. Not cancelled!
I had mine with my dad's side just this tues. Dinner at this cantonese restaurant in chinatown was great. Much as i want to be environmentally-friendly in the meal, i can't! I had to consume a big bowl of shark fins' soup (cos' that restaurant specialises in that. poor sharks...) so that my nainai will be appeased. No objections allowed. Every dish i had was of top-notched quality! However, the company was quite awkward as i didnt see my uncle and aunty helen for... a year? Don't know what to say with them. I prefer hanging out with my cousins at my mom's side of the family! They are a fun bunch!

"Congratulations on the Birth of Your New Baby Girl!"
I was rumaging through my dad's cupboards and found a little bag that mom used to keep letters and wedding invitations. So i browsed through the letters. Heh heh. Let's reveal some scandals! Thought i found some juicy letters, but turned out that they were letters from my missionary uncle to mom. aiya! Not that they are not interesting but I want jucier contents! Haha! You know, discover some secrets or the sorts.
Then, i found this adorable pink card with the front: "Congratulations on the Birth of Your New Baby Girl!" to my mom.
Oh wow! Who's the baby girl?
I realised it was me! I was THE BABY!
ANYWAYS, the content of the card is very meaningful. Let me share it with you.

"A precious gift a baby brings,
A taste of heav'n above;
And as she grows,
from you she'll learn
the story of God's love.
So tenderly and with much prayer,
teach her the way to go,
And when she's grown,
she'll honor you (and),
the ones who loved her so!

Congratulations on the New Addition to the Family!
Dated: 21/9/87"

So moving! *wipes tear*
Look, i'm all grown up!

What to expect from here
